CSUN's MFT Program: In A Nutshell

Curriculum
  • 64-67 unit program over 2.5 years, which includes two summers
  • 12 units of pre-requisites, which must be completed prior to beginning program
  • Meets BBS requirements for LMFT and LPCC
Cohort Model
All students must stay with their assigned cohort. Students are placed in either a Monday/Wednesday Cohort or Tuesday/Thursday Cohort. Both meet from 4:00-10:00pm in the first year and either 4:00-10:00 pm or 1:00-7:00 pm in the second year. Students are placed in a cohort depending on whether they are selected and placed in a university-affiliated field site or a community site. All cohorts begin in the Fall after acceptance. Once assigned to a cohort, students must enroll in those sections designated by course ticket number and instructor for the specific cohort. This ensures all students are able to have access to courses as scheduled. If for exceptional reasons, a student must take a course out of sequence, student must gain approval from the program curriculum coordinator.
Preparation for Licensure In California and Portability to Other States
  • The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) option within the M.S. degree in Counseling is an approved program and provides students with competency in the content areas required by the State Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
  • Each state has unique licensing requirements Students interested in pursuing licensure will find that our national COAMFTE accreditation streamlines the process of qualifying for an LMFT in other states. The Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) provides information about state licensure comparisons.
Fieldwork/Traineeship
  • In their second year of the program, students will begin a 15-25 hour per week field placement where they provide mental health services in the community. This is typically an unpaid training experience, and at some sites students must pay a few for their training experience. These hours may be applied toward licensure as an LMFT.
  • Students must apply for and locate a site from the approved list on the fieldwork page on this website.
  • MFT fieldwork consists of a blend of activities: attending fieldwork courses, counseling clients directly, attending supervision meetings, and participation in other professional activities that may include writing progress notes, giving information and referrals, and attending in-service and staff meetings.
Culminating Experience
  • The culminating experience is the capstone academic activity required by CSUN to receive a Master’s degree.
  • In consultation with their culminating experience faculty advisor, students complete one of three culminating experiences:
    Option 1: Comprehensive Examination: Involves writing 8-10 papers over two semesters and a timed written exam is held approximately four (4) weeks before the end of the final semester.
    Option 2: Master's Project: Involves conducting a review of the literature and applying this knowledge to develop a professionally relevant "project," such as a group curriculum, training video, educational website, program evaluation, or training manual.
    Option 3: Master's Thesis: Involves conducting a qualitative or quantitative study in the area of marriage and family therapy, such as measuring the effectiveness of a program, conducting a survey, or interviewing families about their experiences in therapy.

National Accreditation
CSUN’s MFT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). Accreditation is a voluntary process that is designed to ensure the quality of education provided by marriage and family therapy programs. Completion Rates
Over the past 12 years, the MFT has consistently averaged an 85% completion rate for applicants accepted to the program. Of these, 75% complete the program in the two and half year time period.
