Where to Look:
• Personal Network
• Newspapers and Online Job Boards (e.g. LinkedIn, Indeed.com, etc.) Search for the following jobs:
⁃ Social work
⁃ Counseling
⁃ Psychology
⁃ Psychotherapy
• AAMFT, ACA, and CAMFT have job listings for their members
• Network: Local AAMFT and CAMFT networking events

What Employers are Looking For?
• Reliability
• Professionalism
• Hard worker
• Someone who is easy to supervise
• Someone who can speak intelligently about theory, assessment, diagnosis, law and ethics.
• Someone who can LEARN to be a good therapist--not a perfect clinician

Job Interview Tips:
• Carefully study the organization; read and virtually memorize their webpage or other publications.
• Arrive at least 15 minutes early
• Bring an extra copy of vita on fine paper
• Be gracious
• Dress for success: Conservative, dark colored pant suits for men and women; conservative make-up for women
• Be confident but not pushy
• Be prepared to answer common questions:
⁃ What are your strengths and weaknesses?
⁃ What is your therapeutic approach? (read about the organization to determine a good answer; be flexible)
⁃ Why do you want to work here?
⁃ What are your professional goals? (hint: correct answer is to work at a place like theirs).
⁃ How would you handle suicide, child abuse, etc.?
• Prepare thoughtful questions that reflect your interest in the position
⁃ Describe the typical client?
⁃ Do you offer professional development training?
⁃ What does the typical work week look like?
⁃ When or how would you say the staff connect and get to know each other as people?
• Say thank you; send a thank you email or card
• Approach salary carefully but do not be afraid to address it.
• Your email address should be professional and include your name
• Your voicemail message should be appropriate for a professional audiences (avoid quirky outgoing messages)

References:
• Contact them before you offer their names and numbers.
• Provide vitae to them if you have not worked with them recently.
• If you there is something particular/unusual about the position, let reference know.
• Show appreciation

Bottom-line…
• Professionalism is more important than skill for most internship positions.
• Clinical skills can be taught easily; professionalism is more difficult to teach and learn.
