What does an MFT do?

  • Marriage and Family Therapists are mental health practitioners who are specifically trained to help individuals, couples and families improve and maintain healthy relationships.

  • The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) degree allows you to work effectively in a number of work settings such as community mental health clinics, child and family counseling centers, youth intervention programs, adventure-based counseling programs, mental health units in regional medical centers, emergency mental health centers, day treatment programs, community residences, half-way houses, therapeutic communities, probation and corrections, in-patient treatment facilities for substance abuse and mental health, and community education and prevention programs.

  • In California, MFTs (LMFTs) are the predominant mental health professionals, providing the vast majority of therapy services. MFTs are recognized by virtually all insurance panels and are widely employed in the mental health and health fields.
